Lighting of the tree 2006.

Celebrating the sixtieth aniversary of this unique act of gratitude, expressed by the good people of Norway. We were greeted by the warm smiles of his royal highness the Crown Prince and princess Mette-Marit of Norway, accompanied by their son and their beautiful baby, who did the honours and lit-up the tree.

The Christmas tree was lit on the 29th of November by the mayor of Oslo. The people of Norway once again gave us a tree that we can all feel proud of. That is remembering the enormous popularity of the square at Christmas and the families who love to be photographed under the tree and enjoy the choristers who will be singing there most evenings in the run up to Christmas. Lest we forget the tree is a thank you for the support we gave and the ultimate sacrifice of our service men and women who fought to liberate an oppressed people during the Second World War. So the remembrance and kindness of the people of Norway is reflected in this most generous gift. It has been an area of study over the years for me and I trust my photos reflect a little of the magical sparkle to be found in the square at christmas time.
